Hypnotherapy vs therapy for anxiety

Both work. They work on different layers, at different speeds, and they are not competitors so much as different tools for different jobs.

Short answer

Talk therapy works at the conscious, analytical layer and builds insight and coping capacity over months or years. Clinical hypnotherapy works at the subconscious layer where the anxiety response is encoded, which is why it typically moves faster: most clients complete the arc in three sessions across ninety days. If you want understanding and ongoing support, therapy. If you understand the pattern perfectly and it still fires, hypnotherapy.

The mechanism is the real difference

Cognitive and talk-based therapies work top down. You examine the thought, test it against evidence, and practice a different response until the new response becomes habit. That is genuine change, and it is durable, but it runs through the conscious mind, which is not where the anxiety response is stored.

Clinical hypnotherapy works bottom up. Under hypnosis the analytical filter relaxes and the original imprint becomes accessible, so the meaning attached to it can be re-authored directly. Clients often describe this as the difference between managing a reaction and no longer having it.

When therapy is the better call

When hypnotherapy is the better call

Using both

Most of Dr. Perry's clients keep their therapist. The two are complementary: hypnotherapy resolves the imprint, therapy holds the integration and the life around it. Nothing here is a substitute for medical or psychiatric care, and medication decisions stay with your prescriber.

Common questions

Is hypnotherapy a replacement for therapy?
No. It is a different intervention working on a different layer. Many clients run both at once, and Dr. Perry does not ask anyone to leave their therapist or stop medication.
Why is hypnotherapy faster?
Because it does not rebuild the response through repetition. It locates the original encoding and changes the meaning attached to it, so there is less practice required for the change to hold.
Will insurance cover either one?
Therapy with a licensed mental health provider is often covered. Clinical hypnotherapy with Dr. Perry is private pay and is not billed to insurance.
Which should I try first if I have never done either?
If you cannot yet articulate the pattern, start with therapy. If you can articulate it in one sentence and it still runs you, hypnotherapy is usually the faster route.
